"Brother! What do you mean you haven't seen him the entire time you've been in Central? You moved there three weeks ago!"

Edward held the phone lazily about a foot away from his ear as he only half-listened to what his younger brother was saying. The small office he sat in had more boxes than floorspace, most of the boxes stacked along the wall. The desk he sat at looked like a bomb of papers and books had hit it, but Ed knew where every little thing was... somewhere, in the chaos of it. When Al was done 'scolding' him, he finally put the phone back to his ear and leant back in his seat, closing his eyes. "Central is a big city. I'm a busy man." His voice was blunt and monotone, but Al heard the tone of lying. He always did, when it was Ed.

"You're afraid."

"I'm not afraid!" He yelled, jumping back to sit up. "It'll just be all awkward, we've barely talked this whole time --"

"--And who's fault is that, Edward?! -- " Al cut in.

"Shut up!" He was getting angrier by the second. "--And he's like twenty years older than me --" There was a muttered That's an exhageration, from the other line that Ed ignored. "--We have nothing in common, I have no use for anything in the military. What are we gonna talk about, Al?! Women?!" He let out a twisted laugh at that remark, though only Al would know why.

There was silence, and then a long sigh from Al. "Fine. Don't tell him," He gave in.

Ed narrowed his eyes at the picture in the frame on his desk -- specifically, at Al's smiling face in the picture. "No. Don't do it."

"I don't know what you're talking about, Edward." Al's voice sounded bored -- but it was forced, Ed knew he was trying to mask that he was up to something. Al was an open book. "Oh, Winry needs my help! I gotta go. I'll talk to you later, Ed!"

Ed yelled Al's name but it was too late, Al had already hung up the phone. The blonde slammed the phone back onto the receiver. He knew what that meant. He knew Al had kept contact with him since they'd gone back to Risembool to rehabilitate and heal after the events of getting Al's body back, and Ed's arm. Edward had only kept contact through awkwardly written letters that were vague and didn't include much, like he was talking to an acquaintance -- not the man who had put the idea into his head and sparked the biggest journey of his life, to fix what he'd done to Al and himself. The letters were almost as if to say, Still alive. Haven't caused trouble. No cities were blown up. Don't send military.

It was time to go for the day, Ed decided. He didn't think Mustang cared enough to come here immediately if Al told him -- and Ed was positive Al was already on the phone -- but, he still didn't want to be here. Or home. He didn't trust Al to not mention where he was living or --

Fuck. That bastard already knew what Ed was doing because he told him.

This entire thing just ground his gears more and more. He threw his coat on, pulled the hood up and left, heading out of the building and into the chilly weather.

There was a knock on the door to Roy Mustang's office, and then it promptly opened and Riza slipped in quietly. "Sir," She greeted quietly. "There's a phone call for you." She looked at the phone on his desk before quickly looking back at him and her eyes softened a little bit. "It's Alphonse." Only her superior knew her well enough to see the tug at the corners of her lips as she tried to not show it. "I don't think you want to pass this phone call, Sir." Unlike most phone calls, this time Riza stayed. A suspicious move. She was waiting for something -- for him to hear whatever caused Alphonse to call, perhaps.

When the phone was finally picked up, Alphonse's voice greeted the line with his usual cheer. "Good afternoon, Sir!"

Life for Roy had changed a lot after their journey ended. He had been promoted to Brigadier General not long after, which meant a bigger office and more stress. Also more paperwork, his biggest love in the world. He looked over at the photo on his desk and sighed. He kept in touch with the boys, one more so than the other.

Al probably called every few days or once a week, just to see how everything in Central was going. Ed on the other hand, it was awkward. They only exchanged letters and even then, it was over the course of a few months. He felt something pull in his chest at the thought.

He never told the blonde what he had felt. That he had liked the younger one. One hand it felt wrong and on the other hand, he just didn't think Ed felt the same way.

He was in the middle of some paperwork when Riza came in. He rose a dark brow and just watched her. Interesting. What was so important she was actually staying.

Reaching with a hand, Roy plucked the phone up and put it between his shoulder and ear. "Ah. Al, good afternoon." He replied, leaning back in his seat with a small smile. "How are you? I'm guessing the kid and wife are good?"

"How has Central been? I hope my brother isn't causing too much trouble, there."

Roy froze at the younger man's words, staring ahead at his door. His hand gripped the phone tighter as the words sunk in. Ed was in town and hadn't said a word to him. Which was just like Ed.

He rubbed at his head with a small sigh. "He does have a knack for getting into trouble." He replied in a soft voice. He turned his seat around from Riza, hiding the play of emotions on his face that he tried to control.

"I had no idea that he was here in Central. I'll have to keep an eye out for him. Since he cant seem to come visit old friends." he chuckled, hoping he was hiding his emotions from Al as well.

He stayed on the phone with Al for a bit, the obvious phone call doing its job. When he hung up with Al, he seemed to be drained. "You knew what the call was about, Riza." his tone was accusing but the slight smile on his face told a different story.

He didn't say much after the call to anybody. He finished what he could of his work and then went home. He was supposed to have the next day off, but since there was still so much to do, he decided to go in. Very unlike the old him. Being promoted seemed to change him in a way, for the better probably.

When his alarm went off, Roy was already getting dressed. He'd tossed and turned all night over the information he was given from Al. He almost stayed home but pushed himself out the door. Work still needed to be done, even on his off days.

He grabbed his paperwork and slipped off to the library, hopefully without being seen. Only a few minutes into his work, Roy started to nod off. He shook his head to try and clear it. Another few minutes found him asleep on his back with a book on his chest.

Roy twitched, the hair on the back of his neck starting to stand up. The loud bang did wake him up completely though. He cursed loudly and shot out of his chair to look around. A sigh as he leaned down to pick up the book and rub at his eyes.

Then he caught sight of the others boots. He was prepared to yell at the owner and swallowed his words when he saw exactly who it was.

"....Fullmetal." he knew that Ed was going to say something about the nickname. The other was no longer a state alchemist which meant his attachment to that name was no longer there. It was a force of habit for Roy though.

He schooled his face into a scowl and crossed his arms. "Who let you in here? You shouldn't be here."

Roy had opened his mouth to reply to Ed when he heard Scheska's shrill voice. He rose a brow and stared at her as she rambled on and on. He crossed his arms as he listened, looking out of the corner of his eye at the blonde.

Ed had changed a lot from how he remembered the other. Longer hair, held back in that customary style Ed's father was always seen with. Surprisingly, he was taller too. Roy always thought he was going to stay short. Then again, he was still shorter than him.

"Scheska." was all Roy said, his tone firm. He wasn't going to yell at the younger woman. He knew the reason she had let Ed in and it was the same reason any of them would have let him in.

He sighed and made a motion with his hand as if to cut off her rambling. "It's fine. I'll let it slide this one time. Happens again and we will have a talk." he reached down to pick the book up to take with him. "It's nice to see you again, Fullmetal."

He grabbed the rest of his things with a smirk as he left. Part of him didn't want to leave the room. There was a half of him screaming to go back and start another conversation. If not a conversation, than an invitation to dinner. Instead he kept walking till he had his office door closed behind him.

He leaned against it with a sigh and walked over to his desk to sit down. How in the hell was he supposed to say anything other than awkward phrases that acquaintances said to each other. Not what two people who won a war and almost died together say.

Roy found himself reaching over to a drawer in his desk, pulling it open to reveal memorabilia. A gun, few medals, some more odds and ends. A picture sat in the middle of it all though. It had been taken secretly by someone of a grinning Ed. He leaned back in his seat, staring at the photo as he tried to convince himself to go back to the library.

Roy finally left his office a little bit after his encounter with Ed. He had still managed to talk himself out of going back to the library to find the other. He threw his jacket on and started to head home. Something in the back of his mind kept bugging him though.

He finally ended up stopping at a coffee shop, ordering a coffee and something to nibble on. When he turned around, he wasn't expecting to see Ed yet again.

Ok ok, he got it. He would go talk to the blonde.

He sat his cup of coffee down and sat across from the other. "Edward," he grinned as he leaned back in the chair. "Just when were you going to tell me you were living here now?"

Roy chewed on that answer for a few minutes, just drinking his coffee. He would have just teased Ed about becoming a state alchemist again, but something stopped him. Was it the fact he wanted the other as a state alchemist again? So that he could pass by the blonde at work? Something about working beside the other was just a good feeling.

Other than the fact he wanted to bend the other over his desk.

A light red came over his cheeks that he hid by taking another drink of his coffee. "You know me too well, Edward. You are a good alchemist and it's so sad to see you not around." The older man fiddled with his now empty cup as he thought up more words to say. He didn't want to leave and didn't want the blonde to leave just yet either.

Dammit, he needed to let these feelings go. It was never going to work out.

He stood up quickly, throwing a smirk at Ed. "I should go since you probably want your peace and quiet. Maybe if you're hungry, you can stop by later." He conveniently left out the words, 'and possibly sleep over'. He was working on a plan in his head, even though he knew he should just leave the feelings be. For all he knew, Edward could have a girlfriend back home.

Yeah right, AL would have told him that. The younger brother always seemed to keep him up to date on what Ed was up to. He grabbed his cup to take back to the counter before leaving. As he left, one of the young waitresses brought the blonde a pastry. "A present from the handsome man!" She giggled with a big smile.

One last ditch effort to get Ed to come for dinner, hopefully.

Roy was annoyed and relieved in a way when Ed didn't show up to his house for dinner. Relieved that he could control himself again. Annoyed, because the other didn't even tell him no. He'd spent the night cleaning up and thinking over what to do. He wanted to let the blonde know how he felt, then again, how would the other want him to show his feelings?

Dinner didn't seem to pan out which seemed like a good idea at the time. He finished and then walked up to his bedroom. He flopped back to stair at his ceiling in thought. What else could Ed want? Certainly he didn't want to be courted like some woman, right? He frowned and turned over on his side.

What did he know about courting women? He was used to just getting most things out of women with a smile and a couple of nice words. They usually were panting at his feet from just that. Then again, he should know better about Edward. He wasn't going to be like others.

He changed for bed and laid down again to figure out just what he was going to do. How does one court? There was a possibility he could just read up on this stuff, but maybe he could just give it a try out of the blue.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roy was up and dressed not long before his alarm went off. He'd dreamed of what he could do to show his feelings and to feel out if Ed felt the same way. A quick call to AL not long after and he found himself standing in the back of a conference room. He didn't bother trying to sit like all the others pouring in. He didn't plan to stay too long.

He watched the stage like a hawk and couldn't help the small smirk come over his face when a familiar blonde walked across. He made it a point to lock eyes with the other, an eyebrow raised.

Roy felt his face heat up to the tips of his ears at Ed's words. He should have known that the other would pull something like this. He had always been a prankster. He rolled his shoulders with a smirk and shrugged. "I figured I could take time out of my busy day to see this nice lecture. After all, Fullmetal, you probably give amazing lectures with all that knowledge".

Two could play that game. He wasn't going to let the blonde get to him in front of all these people. He ran a hand through his hair with a soft sigh.

Roy made sure his face didn't give away the obvious annoyance toward Ed's words. He rose a brow when the other told him to wait in his office. He watched him go back to the stage before he moved. A slow walk so that the other could watch him leave.

He didn't have too many rooms to check before he found Edward's office. He gave it a once over before he sat down. It was a pretty big office for a professor, almost the size of his old office as a General. There were so many things he wanted to go through but he kept his hands to himself.

The dark haired man made himself at home in Ed's office. He toed his shoes off abd laid down on the couch. It was kind of awkward in a way. There were books surrounding the couch as if the blonde spent a lot of time there. The blanket thrown across the back of the couch also shows he possibly slept there at times. Roy felt a little flush to his face at the thought of Ed sleeping there.

Dammit Old man, stop. Not until after you talked to him first.

Roy made a noise from his position on the couch. It sounded like an annoyed tch as he rolled over to stand. "Letters? More like childish writings like you were forced to say something back." his face showed his annoyance even though he was trying to hide it. It was things like the notes that really got to Roy. That made him think that there was no room for his type of feelings between them.

He turned his back toward the other, crossing his arms firmly over his chest. He was being defensive now, his playful nature gone for the moment.

"There were things left out of those letters. Questions weren't answered or they were tip toed around." he sighed, his grip tightening on his arms. He was trying to keep from spilling his thoughts out and it was hard. The thought of just seeing if Ed truly felt the same way or not was killing him.

"What? You think we are supposed to get along like old war buddies?"

Those words hit kinda hard with Roy, taking a lot of wind out of his sails. What was he to say to that? How do you even tell someone who used to be your subordinate, including younger than you, that you liked them? Scratch the like thing, possibly more than like them? This all was new to him, in a sense. He couldn't remember the last time he actually had feelings for someone and wanted to date them.

He scratched the back of his head with another sigh. "Maybe I wanted to know more than where you were. Maybe I wanted to know what you were doing, what you were actually studying, what sights you were seeing.." he trailed off quietly, wondering if Ed got the idea of what he was trying to say with his sentence.

If Ed was as dense as he thought the other was, Roy might have to put it right in front of him. He turned around, a red hue coming to his cheeks. "Maybe I just... wondered if you..." he started, fumbling around with the words he wanted to say. He rubbed a hand over his face and shrugged his shoulders. "Nevermind." he turned to put his shoes on, looking like he was ready to run out of the room.

Roy stopped his actions when he heard Ed start to go off. He understood in a way and could even feel for the other since he practically did do all of that. When the other offered meeting at the park, he rose a brow and turned to stare at the other. Just what was Ed up to? He thought it over and knew without a doubt that he would meet the other there, regardless of everything.

"Fine. I'll see you there." he waved at the other over his shoulder as he walked out. He let out a loud sigh, almost as if he had been holding his breath while in the room. What was wrong with him? He needed to get over just what was making this so hard.

Just like Ed said, after dark, Roy was standing in that park. He leaned against one of the slides as he waited for the other.

Roy had expected Ed to be late. It never failed after all with the blonde. The kick to his knees took him by surprise though. He let out a muffled sound, quickly catching himself before he hit the ground. That little bastard! He turned quickly to try and catch Ed with a punch.

So this is what Ed wanted? He wanted to meet in the park for a spar session?!

He bit back the disappointment he felt from it. When did he start to give his hopes up on something like this crush? He'd knew he missed Ed when he felt just air where the other's face had been. He moved back, dropping into a defensive position.

If he could help it, he was going to try and keep from using his alchemy. He still let a hand drop to his pocket to feel for his gloves. The action comforted him when he felt the familiar cloth beneath his fingers.

One rule, no alchemy.

The words surprised Roy before a grin came over his face. He was fine with not using alchemy, but just how long would Ed last before he used alchemy? He pulled his hand away and put his hands up as a show of saying he agreed. Seeing Ed make his way over to him, he steeled himself against the attack.

Ed tried to take him by surprise by his little stunt. Roy couldn't lie, he had been a little bit surprised when Ed didn't immediately drop away. He grunted when the other's knee made contact with his back. He twisted on his way down to grab the other from his back.

He'd planned to just grab the blonde and throw him away. He needed some distance after the knee to his back. He'd only managed to push at the other before the weight of Ed was gone from his back. Roy moved backward to put some distance between them as he caught his breath.

That had hurt, the little shit.

Ed's style had changed since the last time they fought. Which didn't surprise Roy at all considering all the traveling he'd done. Edward was smart, that was something he knew without a doubt. He was academically smart but also curious about other things, in this case, different fighting styles.

Learning how he was fighting and how to counteract all of it, that was going to be hard on Roy.

The brunette's mind tried to pull up a plan to beat the other. He waited for Ed to make the next move, hopefully his mind had planned out the exact movements.

Roy’s shoulders tensed hearing the blonde. That was true, he wanted to catch up. In some ways more than others, but he would take what he could get. Just from the small amount of time they had been sparring, the brunette could tell just how out of shape he was. Since being promoted, he rarely went into the field anymore. Sure, he found himself at times doing a run and working out, but nothing like how he did before. He moved his head side to side in an attempt to loosen the muscles there and then rolled his shoulders. “I’m still waiting on you to continue to tell me what you have done these past few months,” he smirked with a raised eyebrow.

He was being cocky, but that wasn’t new for the alchemist. A few more heartbeats passed before he made a move. Each of his punches and kicks were blocked, the blonde also landing quite a few hits to his body. It was the nice kick to the ribs that actually made him double over to catch his breath.

Goddammit. He really needed to get back into shape after this. It was embarrassing the way he couldn’t even land a hit on the younger one. He even tried to fight dirty and made an attempt to grab for the blonde ponytail. The silky hair slipped right through his fingers as the other dodged him and landed an solid kick straight to his kidney.

The breath rushed out of him and he fell to one knee. He waited for Ed to let his guard down in some way before he tried one more time to land a blow. His leg was quick as he swept Ed’s non-auto Mail leg out from under him. In the few precious seconds of the blonde’s surprise, Roy actually managed to pin him with his weight pressing down on the smaller one. He was quick to smirk as he thought he had won until he was the one on his back. He blinked up at the other with surprise and his teeth actually ground together. He could feel Ed’s auto mail knee digging into his ribs where they were bruised from the kick earlier. Without a lot more pain, there was no way he could turn the tide of the fight.

He’d lost.

His breathing was heavy as he stared at the other. He was waiting for the other to say something.

You’re out of shape.

“No shit Sherlock,” Roy mumbles, unable to contain the retort. It didn’t help that his ego was bruised from losing so badly. He made a mental note that he would be starting to work out more. Just because he was promoted didn’t mean he should let himself get so complacent that he wouldn’t put up a better fight.

The brunette stared at the hand held out for him. He contemplated not taking it at all and just getting up himself, albeit a bit slowly. In the end, his own hand reached up and he clasped the outstretched hand to help pull himself up. He winced, his ribs protesting very loudly. He was going to need some medication before work in the morning.

Ed’s question of drinks surprised Roy. He rose a brow and stared at the shorter one. He couldn’t help but admire the fact again just how tall Ed had grown and filled out. It made his stomach clench in an unadulterated way.

Roy tore his eyes away from the other and rubbed at his side. He put on his signature smirk, brushing past the blonde. “Drinks sound amazing. Thanks for offering to buy~”, the older one teased as he walked away. He knew that the blonde would protest but still follow him. While Ed had been in Central for a bit, he probably didn’t go out enough to know where the best spots were.

The older brunette lead them to one of his favorite bars, opening the door and nodded with his head for the younger one to go inside. It wasn’t until that second that his mind supplied him with a thought. This probably was not the best idea. Roy had mostly given up drinking after a few rough years. Now he rarely drank, but his tolerance to the alcohol still held high. Knowing the other, Ed was bound to make it into a competition. Which could possibly end badly.

Or end perfectly and your bed sees some action.

Roy’s Adam’s Apple slowly dipped as he swallowed slowly. Oh the thoughts running rampant after his mind said those words. He couldn’t help his eyes as they looked Ed up and down when he walked inside, his stomach giving another delicious clench.

This was going to be a long night.
